The painting of Mari Jone was part of a larger commission I did for Vancouver based Waterfront Shipping. Mari Jone and her sisters were the first methanol-fueled ocean tankers in the world. Methanol is a biodegradable, clean-burning marine fuel that significantly reduces smog-causing emissions. To emphasize this fact, you can read ‘Powered by Methanol’ on the ships flanks.
Old Holland was established in 1664 and is still using recipes from the old masters. I like their beautiful intense colors which really stand out well in every painting I create.
Creating paintings of Naval ships is not an easy task because most of the time they are painted totally gray! This is quite a challenge to make each painting look appealing.
Especially the high amount of details on the decks of the Mari Jone have made this a very difficult painting to make. Ofcourse these details stand out because of the viewpoint.

This painting shows the ocean-going patrol vessel (OPV) Zr.Ms. Zeeland of the so called Holland-class. This Royal Netherlands Navy vessel was completely built in Vlissingen at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. I was very content with the foggy late afternoon atmosphere in this watercolor. It wasn’t easy to make a painting with so little color look this interesting.
I only use the best brand of Watercolor paint namely Old Holland and watercolor paper of the famous Fabriano and Arches brands.
I do enjoy painting modern ships. as much as doing a painting of a classic liner. I do believe all ships have a beauty of their own.
I have made a total of 13 paintings for this Dutch company. Vroon does have a varied fleet of more than 200 ships and has more than 100 years experience in shipping!

Over the years I have created a large series of watercolors for the renowned Dutch shipping company Vroon. The challenge of this commission was to make each and every painting look different from the other ones. This large commission was a great learning school for me as a maritime artist and has provided me with a lot of experience.
